Get out while you can – Escape the rat race

This article is about the new fantastic book by Mr. George Marshall, Get out while you can – escape the rat race 2011. This was a recent purchase and the first book I have read from front to back in a very long time.

Want to make more money? Keep reading…

Recently, I have been very interested in the idea of trying to make more money, but thinking of an opportunity to help me make more money is very difficult.

The skills I have at my disposal to make more money

By day I am a web developer and I am pretty handy with graphic design too, so these are the skills I have at my disposal in order to make me more money.

Now, with those skills, you may be thinking that the best way for me to make more money outside of my full-time job is to do a bit of freelance website design on the side, right?
But the thing is, I didn’t want the stresses of a 9-5 job, to then have to come home and spend any/all of my spare time working with clients to make a quick buck, because inevitably, freelance website design does not make for quick money. Far from it in fact.

So, the question is how can I make more money whilst ensuring my time (which is very valuable to me) is used in the most efficient way possible..?

It’s not what you know, but who you know…

Luckily for me, I have a good friend that is also a work colleague and his name is Tom. Now Tom is very much an idea man, but not necessarily the best at executing those ideas. Don’t get me wrong, this is by no-means a failing, because Tom actually manages to use this to his strength, whether he would admit this or not is another question.

As I said previously, Tom is very much an idea man, and I think we work well in bouncing ideas off each other to make the most of the skill-sets and experience we both have, which is of course in the web industry, so what better way for both of us to make more money than to take the skills we both have and put them to use, but not by doing freelance website design work in our spare time?

Buying domain names and monetising websites

So, Tom introduced me to the idea of buying domain names, designing and building a website and then monetising them.

Not only did he suggest this idea to me, but he pointed me in the direction of www.acorndomains.co.uk, which is a fantastic forum for domainers that contains a massive amount of information within it’s archives, as well as being ‘home’ to an incredible group of people with a vast amount of knowledge in the industry, which means Acorn Domains is perfect if you want to find out about anything to do with online marketing, affiliate networks, monetising certain niches, etc, with help only a few button clicks and a question away.

Reading information is your key to success

With the masses of help and information available on the forum and with me constantly reading silently in the background, with experienced domainers constantly feeding my hunger for more knowledge, I stumbled across a post about marketing books that are worthwhile reading, one of which happened to be George Marshall’s Get Out While You Can – Escape The Rat Race – 2011. I duly purchased this book and over the course of the next 2 weeks, I read the entire book and found it very enlightening, helpful and even a little bit liberating to think that escaping “wage slavery” is even possible.

“Plan B: A simple yet revolutionary idea…”

Reading the back of my newly purchased book, I feared this book would be a little far fetched , but after reading through the first few pages, that fear was laid to rest rather quickly. Here are a few lines found on the back of the book:

Starting today, you can work less hours, work the hours you choose, and earn more money, doing whatever it is you want to do with your time – all from the comfort of your own home. And your home can be wherever in the world you want it to be!

Now the above quote instantly got me thinking that I may have made a mistake in purchasing this book. Work less hours and work the hours I choose? Pfft… and this is going to make me money? But as a very open minded person, I read on:

And it’s all thanks to the amazing opportunities that are afforded each and every one of us courtesy of the information age. If you can turn on a computer, you can use Plan B to make money. Perhaps more money than you ever imagined possible.

Now this was the quote that done it for me. Mainly because I can turn on a computer. =)

But seriously, making my life better and spending more time with my family is what I aim to achieve, especially seeing as my wife is expecting our first child in just a few weeks time. If this book can help me achieve this, then I will forever be in George Marshall’s debt.

Bend it like Beckham

One of the names that keeps rearing their head throughout the book is David Beckham. Now you might be sat there thinking what the hell has monetising websites got to do with David Beckham? Well the truth is, quite a lot, because Plan B is all about multiple revenue streams. David Beckham has plenty of these, what with his:

  • £25 million a year, 5 year deal with LA Galaxy in 2007
  • £1.25 million from Adidas for endorsement rights in 2001
  • In 2007, Giorgio Armani reportedly paid him £20 million to be a global ambassador
  • Pepsi, Sony, Brylcreem, Motorola, Marks & Spencer and Police sunglasses (to name but a few) have all been part of the David Beckham multiple revenue streams since he started playing football for Manchester United in 1992.

Other than being obscenely generous figures being thrown around, these multiple revenue streams are doing something special. They all earn David Beckham money 24 hours a day and this is what George is trying to get across – Make each hour of work you put in make you money over and over and over and over again.

When you go to work, you get paid by the hour. Once a single hour of work is done, you have earned say £5 -£10 for that hour, for 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week 173 hours a month, 2080 hours a year. So you earn 2080 x £ your hourly wage per year.

George’s plan – Plan B – is that for every 1 hour you spend working on writing an article for selling something like a power drill, this 1 hours work can make you money every time someone purchases this product advertised by your article using affiliate links, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for as many years as you decide to keep your website. Brilliant!

Multiple revenue streams

Obviously I do not think I will be matching the kind of figures David Beckham can boast, but George makes it blatantly obvious that you should be aiming to earn just £1 per day. Full stop.

(To find out how you can make a living out of this, you will have to read the book.)

With the right web hosting service used, setting up a new website can cost around £50. This £50 outlay can earn you an unlimited sum of money for years to come, but you should be aiming at making £1 per day x 365 days = £365 p/a for your Plan B to be successful.

Millionaire Days:

George mentions about “Millionaire days”. If you were to earn 1 million pounds in a year, you would need to earn an average of £2,740 per day. George has worked his Plan B successfully enough for him to (occasionally) earn £2,740 in a single day. He calls this a Millionaire day.

£2,740 in a single “Millionaire day” from multiple revenue streams? Now there’s a challenge. =)

Get Out While You Can – I intend to

George Marshall’s Plan B is about spending your time wisely. Making every hour count is paramount to Plan B working.

I intend to make Plan B work for me and when it does, I will send George an email of thanks for helping me spend more time with my Wife and my new Baby (due on May 30th 2011).

Do you aim to spend less time working? Do you want to work the hours that you choose and want to earn more money doing what you want to do? Then buy George Marshall’s Get out while you can – Escape the rat race in 2011.
